I personally despise the term graphic design… it’s not like you really design graphics for a living.
I suggest getting into Interactive Media Design which is a much more current career. Print is pretty much dead, all the money is in interactive. Online schools? Don’t know much about them, but you can check out www.lynda.com they have plenty of excellent tutorials to get you started.

I am a graphic artist and it’s a very rewarding job. Luckily I am in television and there is always a demand for us. Even aside from on air graphics or animations, we still erect any graphics relating the station be it print or even the web.
I would highly recommend going to a school in self, nothing beats hand-on experience in my opinion. Plus the interaction with other classmates was a fantastic learning process as well.
The web seems to be always growing, I would reckon in this day and age that might be the best place to initiation looking for a job. You could also freelance for public and companies. Hope this information helps and excellent luck!
I am really a graphic designer that is in print design. I like my job I work for one of the largest beer distributors in salt lake city. I like that I get to use my artistic skills while also getting paid a decent and reliable salary. If you are a graphic designer you can do many things, you can work a full time job and also do freelance on the side (believe me the superfluous money is nice). As a graphic designer I have finally got the respect that I deserve for my artistic abilities. There are many graphic design jobs out there and it is a rapidly growing industry.
